Acclaimed author and director of Bedford Interactive Productions, Jacqueline Smith-Autard, has been awarded the USA National Dance Education Organization OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AWARD for 2011.

We received confirmation of this today, the notification states: 'This honor recognizes your ongoing commitment to advancing the field of dance education nationally and internationally'

Jacqueline will be receiving the award at the 2011 Conference in Minneapolis, MN in October.

FORMotion Update

FORMotion is a software toolkit being developed by Bedford Interactive, which will allow dance teachers and anyone else interested in motion study, to manipulate and compare their video resources via a two screen interface. Comparing footage of dance from different angles, different interpretations of the same dance, or even different dances can be hugely beneficial in improving dance appreciation, performance and composition. The software will also have a wide range of applications beyond the dance studio, archiving dance in universities and libraries, and other areas of motion study, including sport.

The FORMotion Project is now well under way, thanks to a grant for Research & Development from Yorkshire Forward. Phase 1 of this research began in ernest in February 2010, and we can now give you some tantalising glimpses of what FORMotion may look like.

It was recently brought to our attention that the academic papers section of the website has been down for some time. We would like to apologise to any users who have been trying to access this service and are happy to announce that all functionality has been restored! All our published academic papers between 1992 and 2001 are available for free download in PDF format, covering a wide range of subjects from "the Artist’s Role in the Development of New Technologies" to "Design of a Dance Multimedia Title".

Dance Database - How can we build a network?

Dance Interactive's online presence now includes what marketing departments love to call Web2.0. But how can we build a network of dance teachers that use technology, and what can we do to make that network really work in the interests of dance educators..?

1. Early days but we hope Facebook will become the hub of communication between our contacts across the world. The Wall for leaving messages and the Discussion Board can be used like a Forum so people can exchange ideas and make new contacts, as well as ask us questions. We have yet to determine how many of our contacts use Facebook, and what level of interest they would have in joining the group.

2. The ability to find out who uses Bedford Interactive's resources in your local area could have many benefits. You can ask us and we can query our database for you, but we will not release any information without the owner's permission.

3. Arranging demonstration workshops in areas where there are groups of users already talking to each other becomes much more viable.

4. We will soon be using the networks to invite interested users to participate in our FORMotion project, where your own dance video materials can be inserted into our new software toolkit. Phase 1 software will be free to those willing to donate their video and a bit of time towards our research period enabling us to perfect a general purpose version for Do-It-Yourself authoring of interactive dance resources.

5. Now we can have a turnover of contact information. As people move house, move jobs, change email address or even get married they can fall off our database. If you have lost contact with us and wish to be re-added, send us an email here
Our total list of hard contacts (people who have bought our products) is well over 4,000, so there may be many who we can no longer reach with our missives.

Dance Interactive on Facebook

We've joined Facebook and created a new group to try and encourage the community of dance teachers who use our titles to talk to each other more, share ideas, resources and to make it easier to stay in contact with, and help our customers with any problems they may be having.

Over the last ten years we've sold our resources for dance teachers all over the world, primarily using our website www.dance-interactive.com (although it used to be called www.dance-interactive.web.com before web.com decided to stop using web.com... confused? we were too!).

Here are two maps showing in red all the countries we've sold our resources to and in green the countries in which we're yet to make any sales.

Another new addition to the gallery includes images from Step Dance, our CD-ROM for teaching dance in primary schools.

Vocalise + Voctools Demo Disc

You can now try out Bedford Interactive's innovative new software package for free!

This disc features a trailer demonstrating the Vocalise Performance Disc and a working demo of Vocalise's bonus video toolkit, Voctools.

Voctools allows you to watch the dance footage in any way you want, using a twin-screen display, you can compare any two camera angles and synchronise them, with front, back, left, right, close-up of feet, close-up of upper body and overhead modes to chose from. Other tools include LOOP which allows you to loop a user-defined section of the dance for closer inspection of those subtle nuances of movement. Another is MIRROR which emulates the dance studio mirror to help get around the problem of seeing the dance reflected when you're practicing in the studio. All these tools and more are currently being developed into a software application called FORMotion, which will allow you to use them with your own dance footage. More news about FORMotion on the way, so watch this space.
